THE INJURED COLON



Abstract
Clinical analysis of 26 cases of the injured colon o >erated at Surgical Department of Kyung-Hee Medical C: inter, from March 1982 to Febrary 1989 was done.
The results of this study were as follows;
1) Age incidence was most prevalent in the 3rd decacdo (38.5%), and the ratio of male to female was 4.2:1.
2) In the 27 cases of the injured colon, blunt trauma WS most common cause (16 cases, 61.5%) and stab W Fund was in 9 cases.
3) The site of injured colon was tranverse colone and Li. colon in 10 cases respectively and Rt. colon in 6
C.: ses.
Dut of the 26 cases, 23 cases (88.5%, ) had associatedinjuries to other organ. The small bowel and bone were injured most frequently.
4) In the 26 cases of injured colon, primary closures were performed in 12 cases (46.2%) and colostomy in 8 cases (30.8%), exteriorization in 3 cases (11.5%) and primary closure with tube celostomy in 2 cases (7.7%) and resection and anastomosis in 1 case.
5) Postoperative complications were generated in 19 cases (73.1%) of total cases of 26, and pulmonary complication in 8 cases, wound infection in 7 cases and intraabdominal abscess in 7 cases.
6) Postoperative complications did not related with type of operation or site of injured colon but significantly related with Grade III of injury and treated cases over 24 hours after injury.
7) The mortality rate was 11% (3/26) and the cause of death were hypovolemic shock (2 cases) and brain dam-age (1 case).
